Information about Kamakura

Kamakura is located about an hour south of Tokyo on the coast in Kanagawa Prefecture. In the late 12th century, the city was the seat of the Kamakura Shogunate and thus the political center of Japan.

Even after it ceded its function to Kyoto, it continued to be an important center in eastern Japan. Today, Kamakura is a relatively small city that is a popular tourist destination. A variety of temples and shrines offer extensive opportunities to step back in time to ancient Japan. In summer, the city's sandy beaches are also popular with water sports enthusiasts and bathers.

Interesting facts about Kamakura

The most famous attraction of the city is the large sitting Buddha "Kamakura Daibutsu", whose interior you can even enter!

The Hasedera Temple, located on a hill, offers a great view over Kamakura.

The island of Enoshima is located just off the coast near Kamakura and is itself a popular destination. Among other things, it is a center of sailing.

A variety of beautiful hiking trails lead through the forested hills surrounding the city.

The Great Buddha of Kamakura (Daibutsu) is one of Japan's most iconic landmarks, standing tall at 13.35 meters (43.8 feet).
